Mendocino’s MacCallum House Debuts New Spring Menus and Whale Watching Package

MENDOCINO, CA – (February 22, 2024) – The storied MacCallum House, located in the heart of the quaint Mendocino Village on the coast of Northern California, introduces new Spring menus in their celebrated restaurant, a Whale of Sale package during all of March to coincide with Mendocino’s much anticipated Whale Festival, and the unveiling of their recently renovated ocean-view Attic Suite.

New Spring 2024 Menus

MacCallum House’s Restaurant practically invented farm-to-table, with the finest organic ingredients sourced locally. Executive Chef Alan Kantor is renowned for his creative and exquisite cuisine. He prepares everything in his own kitchen, including breads, hand-rolled pastas, smoked meat, fish, and poultry. Hand-crafted dishes that can be enjoyed on their new Spring menu include starters like Grilled Artichoke Bocconcini with Prosciutto, Roasted Red Pepper, Roasted Garlic Aioli and Balsamic Reduction; Duck Rillettes, a Rustic Paté of Confit, Whole Grain Mustard, Pickled Red Onions, and Herbed Croutes; or the Evening Soup, where there is always a vegan option. Entrées such as Saffron Risotto with Sugar Snap Peas, Leeks, Arugula, Mozzarella, Roasted Pepper Salad, Shaved Pennyroyal Farm Boont Corners Cheese, and Chive Oil; Grilled Rack of Lamb Chops with a Mascarpone Polenta, Morel Cabernet Reduction, Spinach, Black Olives, and Pistachio Sauté; or Grilled Painted Hills Steak with a Porcini Rub, Grilled Asparagus, Crispy Fingerling Potatoes, and Sauce Foyot tempt the tastebuds.

No meal would be complete without one of the Chef’s decadent desserts. How could anyone resist his Chocolate Extravaganza, consisting of a Chocolate Bourbon Pecan truffle, Chocolate Cabernet Cherry Ice Cream, and Devil’s Food Cake made with Chocolate Ganache, Hazelnut Mousse, and Espresso Creme Anglaise or a Banana Split with three Scoops of House-made Ice Cream, Chocolate and Caramel Sauce, Whipped Cream, and Candied Hazelnuts, to name just two of the desserts on offer?

Of course, many will opt for Chef Kantor’s Spring tasting menu, prepared for the whole table (also includes a vegetarian option). Some of the delectable items featured are Pacific Rim Oysters on the Half Shell with Fire Roasted Jalapeño and Lime Mignonette; Tempura Shrimp Toast with Shiitake Mushrooms, Kumquat Ponzu, Cashew Wasabi Sauce, and Thai Mango Slaw; or Pan Seared Duck Breast with Confit and Fromage Blanc Bread Pudding, Tangerine Gastrique, and Braised Belgian Endive. Diners can select a wine or whiskey pairing to accompany.

The new Spring cocktail menu offer delightful, artisanal cocktails such as the Mendo Mango with Redemption Bourbon, Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur, mango syrup, lemon juice, and Angostura Bitters or and the Pineapple Spring with Hetchy Vodka, pineapple juice, lime juice, and agave nectar. There is also a rotating specialty cocktail on offer each evening.

A stay at the MacCallum House includes a complimentary, made-to-order breakfast, and the Spring breakfast menu boasts classics such as a Mac Benedict with Two Poached Eggs, Niman Ranch Ham, Sourdough Toast, Chive Hollandaise, Arugula, and Griddled Yukon Gold Potatoes; Whole Grain Pancakes with Maple Syrup, Toasted Pecan Butter, and an optional Scoop of Vanilla Bean Ice Cream; or Huevos Rancheros with Eggs, Corn Tortillas, Pinto Beans, House made Pork Sausage, Pepper Sauté, Queso Fresco, Adobo Sauce, Sour Cream, Guacamole, and Smoked Habanero Salsa – among other dishes.

Whale of a Sale

Whale festivals abound on the Mendocino Coast in March to take advantage of the peak of the whale migration when these gentle giants can often be spotted right from shore. The town of Mendocino’s festival is a Whale and Wine Walk on Saturday, March 2nd. Attendees can stroll the village or take a trolley ride through town to visit the shops, inns and galleries who will be hosting local Anderson Valley wineries and providing tasty appetizers to pair with them.  Other whale festivals in nearby Fort Bragg and Little River add to the fun. In honor of the festivals, MacCallum House has a Whale of a Sale package that is good throughout the month of March. The very special rate is $239 per night for the best available room (excluding certain rooms). A whale watching tour for two with Anchor Charters can be added on for $100 more. The package also includes two “Gray Whale” gin cocktails (The Gray Whale Gin & Tonic with Gray Whale Gin, Grapefruit Shrub, Tonic Water and Rosemary).

Room Refresh

Room 6, the hotel’s Superior Ocean-view Attic Suite, has undergone a delightful refresh. Beautiful beadboard painted a crisp white now lines the walls of the East Bedroom, and both bedrooms now have wood floors. The bathroom has been outfitted with a new floor and fixtures and fresh paint. A new TV in the sitting room, along with new furniture, has been added, while classic pieces remain, for lounging in front of the gas fireplace.
