Golf’s Historic Return to Newport- The USGA Senior Open

In addition to the classic sports of sailing and tennis more highly associated with Newport, golf has been a thriving sport on “The Classic Coast” since 1895, when it hosted the first U.S. Open Championship.

This year, the Newport Country Club will host the 44th U.S. Senior Open Championship on June 27-30, 2024.  This will be the fifth USGA championship for the historic venue, which was the site of the inaugural U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur in 1895. As one of the five founding members of the USGA, Newport Country Club will become the sixth club to have held a U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Amateur and U.S. Senior Open.

In addition to the links at the Newport Country Club,  golf enthusiasts can enjoy Scottish links-style courses with panoramic vistas of the Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean throughout Newport and Bristol County. Play amongst beauty at Montaup Country Club’s 18-hold course to try the signature hole, the Par 5 16th, that overlooks the scenic Hope Bay and Bridge- its first three holes are considered by some to bethe toughest starting holes in Rhode Island. Newport National Golf Club, reminiscent of the legendary Scottish links, is considered the “Number One Public Access Course in New England.” Its dramatic setting invites views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sakonnet Passage.
