Tonight Valencia’s Beaches Welcome Summer

VALÈNCIA, Spain (June 23, 2023) – The vibrant city of València, known for its mouthwatering gastronomy and cultural offerings, is set to come alive once again as it welcomes back the eagerly anticipated San Juan festival taking place today, June 23rd. The Night of San Juan, also known as the Feast of Saint John, is an ancient Valencian tradition that pays homage to the summer solstice. It is a time of joy, renewal and hope, where Valencians, along with countless visitors from around the world, gather on the city’s beaches to welcome the arrival of a new summer season filled with possibilities.

The festivities will unfold along the stunning beaches of València, creating a picturesque setting for the celebration. The central theme of the Night of San Juan is fire and water. Bonfires, symbolizing the cleansing of the old and the welcoming of the new, will be set ablaze along the shores while families, friends, and strangers unite, eagerly awaiting the clock to strike midnight, signaling the beginning of the festivities. Throughout the night, participants will be embracing rituals such as fire-jumping, meant to burn one’s problems away and attract good luck; throwing something old in the fire to represent a new start; barbequing over the flames; singing traditional songs; swimming in the ocean to purify one’s soul and heal the body; or writing down their wishes for the months ahead on a piece of paper to later burn and manifest. The atmosphere is electric, filled with laughter, music, and the anticipation of their lives.

Participants can build their bonfires with the firewood passed around in trucks promoted by the event and scattered at nine points between the beaches of Malvarrosa and Cabañal-Cañamelar. The trucks begin their rounds at 6:00 pm, but people are encouraged to arrive as early as they can to score a great spot on the beach. Public transportation is facilitated all around the city on the day of the festival. Multiple bus lines will run more frequently than usual to take passengers to the beach. Their hours of operation will also be expended so partygoers can feel free to enjoy themselves all night. The festivities end at 4:00 am, marked by the cleaning personnel that will appear to clean up the beach for the morning after, however, it is custom for groups to pick up after themselves as soon as they leave.
