Every year, hundreds of the world’s best long-distance runners flock to a small volcanic island off the coast of Western Sahara for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. These athletes arrive on the island and begin to make their way to the summit of the world’s third-largest volcano, trekking through mountains, plains, beaches, forests, and anything else nature throws their way. No, this is not the plot of a James Bond movie; this is the Tenerife BlueTrail by UTMB.
Tenerife, the largest of the Spanish Canary Islands, presents the perfect location for such an event. The Tenerife Blue Trail excursion offers five races varying from 24km to 110km with a maximum total elevation gain that surpasses 6250m. This extensive range of distances and additional disability support allows anyone to test themselves, no matter their age or preparation. During these races, participants will get a chance to explore the beautiful island of Tenerife from sea to sky as they push their physical limits to the edge.
From June 6th to 8th, runners of the 110km trail will get to make their way through a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Teide National Park and reach the summit of Mt. Teide. If done well, participants will make it just in time to watch the sunrise from the highest point in Spain. From there on out, the descent from the volcano leads runners through dense forests, culminating in a beachside finish line.
