This morning at 10:00 am local time, the gentoo penguins that reside at Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium (WOW) in Springfield, Missouri, were treated to a snow day outdoors.
With the recent winter storm that swept through the region, coupled with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees, the tuxedoed looking gentoo penguins waddled out to their temporary outdoor space to enjoy some play time in the snow. Native to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, gentoos are the third largest penguin species and the fastest underwater with an ability to reach up to 22 mph while diving for food.
The team at Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife, along with the facility that houses these amazing creatures, provides the most natural environment possible for its animals. The penguins snow day is an example of how WOW makes it possible for its animals to engage in natural behaviors and settings.
