The guided Catrina experience begins in the hotel lobby where guests can view a traditional Ofrenda de Muertos arranged to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. Constructed with vivid hues, flickering candles, and intricate Mexican motifs, the Ofrenda de Muertos serves as a captivating tribute to those no longer with us.
The tour then continues to the hotel’s garden area, where guests will enjoy the life size Catrinas. Eight captivating sculptures each represent distinct characters and stages of Puerto Vallarta’s vibrant history. A fisherman, an iconic symbol of Puerto Vallarta’s heritage, along with local market vendors, religious women, singers, and other notable personalities are closely linked to the port city. The Catrinas will be adorned with traditional Day of the Dead embellishments, imbuing the holiday with the vibrant spirit and deep significance it holds for Mexico. Throughout the experience, guests will have the opportunity to engage with their knowledgeable guides who will explain the origins and cultural significance of the cherished traditions. The immersive experience promises to provide guests with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Day of the Dead.
The Catrinas were created by Mexican artist Fabiola Jaydar. Originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, Fabiola is a painter, sculptor and muralist, and her works often showcase Mexican culture and customs. Each life-sized Catrina required a time investment of three to four weeks for its creation. The process involved careful consideration of character selection, costume design, and skeleton design. Each Catrina was meticulously crafted, incorporating various elements to complete the character including hats and headdresses to complement the overall character.
