Xcaret, Riviera Maya, April 19, 2024 – Xcaret has been Mexico’s leader in sustainable tourism for more than 30 years. Since its founding, Xcaret’s vision for sustainability has been based on projects and programs that support the conservation of the environment and demonstrate respect for the natural resources and traditional communities in the area.
Sustainability has become more than a passing trend, it is a lifestyle, and sustainability-savvy travelers are increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint, seeking responsible travel options that reduce environmental impact and support local communities. Xcaret, whose goal is to make the planet a happier and healthier place, while spreading their love for Mexico, shares their commitment to the environment via initiatives that support a balance between people, the planet, and prosperity. Through their varied and substantive sustainability programs, Xcaret ensures guests know that as much as they are enjoying a superlative hospitality experience, they are contributing to the betterment of the travel industry and the planet overall.
Located in the Mexican lush jungle and facing the turquoise Caribbean Sea, Xcaret’s All-Fun Inclusive luxury and ultra-luxury hotels including Hotel Xcaret Mexico, Hotel Xcaret Arte, and La Casa de la Playa feature eco-integrated and sustainability-led architecture and design that delivers a harmonious coexistence with nature and makes efficient use of resources such as natural lighting and locally sourced materials. The first of its hotels, Hotel Xcaret Mexico, was the first hotel in the Americas to receive the internationally recognized EarthCheck Certification in Planning and Design. In the development of the succeeding hotels, Hotel Xcaret Arte and La Casa de La Playa, sustainability measures were at the core of all stages of conception, design, construction, and operations. As a result, Hotel Xcaret Arte was honored with a Sustainable Luxury Awards and La Casa de la Playa received the prestigious Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star award for both the hotel and its Muluk Spa. All three properties have been designated as AAA Five-Diamond hotels and feature the All-Fun Inclusive® program providing guests unlimited access and transportation to the most iconic eco-adventure parks in Cancun and Riviera Maya, including Xcaret park.
The hotel’s Muluk Spa, an award-winning world-class spa set among natural rocks and rivers, features a comprehensive wellness program where guests can enjoy a variety of treatments designed for relaxing body, mind, and being. The spa has implemented a program aimed at reducing paper and plastic usage by 90%, aligning with the hotel’s sustainability initiatives. Additionally, spa employees consistently engage in training programs to ensure compliance with international quality standards such as Cristal. Muluk Spa also collaborates with a supplier that holds the “B” Corp certification, a European acknowledgment for sustainable companies, and spa located at La Casa de la Playa was recently named Five-Star Spa in the Forbes Travel Guide awards.
Xcaret’s commitment to preserving and conserving nature can also be observed in a myriad of initiatives including relocating trees used during the hotel’s construction, use of salt instead of chlorine to treat pools and bodies of water, providing guests with reusable cups and water bottles, filling over 2,600 bottles of water on-site at the hotel’s purification plant, growing organic herbs at their on-site garden for use in restaurants and planting native plants and trees on-site.
Some of the sustainable programs and actions implemented by Xcaret to care for and preserve the environment include:
Planet:
- Commitment to comprehensive water management by using 18 wastewater and osmosis treatment plants to reuse a large quantity of the water required as part of everyday operations while respecting the importance of water to communities and ecosystems.
- Currently taking advantage of natural light and wind in all properties, Xcaret uses energy efficiently and will soon migrate to clean energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by daily operations.
- Development of a solid waste management program with seven Transfer and Collection Centers to separate, treat, dispose, and transport the waste generated in all parks, tours, and hotels in a responsible way, recuperating and recycling 78% of it in 2023.
Nature:
- Conservation of the ecosystem through nurseries and reforestation efforts reproducing over 282k plants from different native species, rescuing and rehoming 420 types of plants, and using over 330k native plants at Xcaret properties and in the community in 2023.
- Monitoring efforts and casuarina eradication in the mangroves located in the Riviera Maya Forest Nursery where over 78k plants of 115 species were produced for the benefit of the local community.
Animals:
- At La Casa de la Playa each suite includes a habitat for Aurelia jellyfish that were reproduced at the property within a marine life laboratory. The “umbrella” jellyfish are a local species of the region and its reproduction program is one of the many reproduction programs at Xcaret. The habitats are fully equipped and cared for by experts who work every day in the laboratory inside the hotel and they serve to help guests become familiar with this type of marine fauna.
Through its comprehensive actions, Xcaret has demonstrated its leadership in sustainable tourism recreation, providing great benefits to the areas of Quintana Roo and the Yucatan Peninsula while becoming a national example for those looking to implement modern sustainable practices.
