Born in the Jim Crow-era South, Jimmie James’ birth certificate bluntly recorded the facts about him deemed most relevant then: “colored” and “illegitimate.” Four decades later—having put himself through an HBCU and determinedly risen through the executive ranks at ExxonMobil – Jimmie picked up his first golf club and began his journey of Playing from the Rough.
Out June 11 from Simon & Schuster, Playing from the Rough is an extraordinary new memoir that chronicles Jimmie’s audacious quest to play each of America’s 100 greatest golf courses in just one year. The book is, in part, an ode to golf: Jimmie’s passion for the sport shines on every page. But, more critically, Jimmie’s story offers poignant and timely meditations on:
- The American Dream: Jimmie’s story embodies the essence of the American dream—rising above adversity through hard work, perseverance, and unwavering belief. His journey from humble beginnings to corporate success is a testament to the power of determination.
- The Power of Networking: Jimmie’s ability to connect with people from all walks of life, including professional golfers and industry insiders, adds an intriguing dimension to the book. His tireless efforts (he always aimed to be invited to courses, rather than request the invitation), coupled with support from influential figures, promise an engaging narrative both on and off the page.
- Race and Class: Against the backdrop of a divided America, Jimmie’s memoir offers a refreshing perspective on overcoming racial and socioeconomic barriers. His story sheds light on the complexities of American society while maintaining a hopeful outlook on the future.
About the Author: Born in 1959 to a single mother of eight in Jim Crow-era Texas, Jimmie James emerged from humble beginnings, growing up in a shack without electricity or plumbing. He was the first in his family not only to graduate from high school but also to pursue and earn a college degree. He graduated from Prairie View A&M University at the top of his engineering class. In his thirty-three-year career with Exxon, James rose from an entry-level engineer to a globe-trotting executive, overseeing businesses across the world. Now retired, he splits his time between Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Kiawah Island, and enjoys golfing, travel, photography, and chess. He and his wife, Erika, have two young adult children, Jordan and Alexandra.
