Balsam Mountain Preserve Announces Completion of Equestrian Facilities
(SYLVA, N.C.) – Balsam Mountain Preserve, a premier resort-style private residential community nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, recently completed construction of a new four-stall barn and accompanying pastures.
Under the guidance of equestrian director Lila Kilby, the barn will present a range of activities, including lessons and guided trail rides. With its picturesque surroundings and breathtaking views, Balsam Mountain Preserve is the perfect setting for horse enthusiasts to explore the beauty of nature while enjoying their favorite equestrian pursuits.
“This project is the culmination of our team’s vision and dedication to growing the equestrian program for Balsam Mountain Preserve residents,” Kilby says. “Our equestrian offerings continue to grow and showcase why this community is a top choice for individuals and families from North Carolina and around the country who are looking for an intimate equestrian experience. It’s an honor to lead our equestrian efforts into this new era of opportunity.”
The new four-stall barn is a welcome addition to the community and perfect complement to the main 14-stall barn erected in 2008 by renowned builder Morton Buildings. The barn, primarily used for boarding members’ horses, emphasizes adventure riding and features first-class care for the horses plus several amenities such as wash racks, tack rooms, a feed room, director’s office and an on-site apartment. Additionally, an outdoor riding arena with multi-discipline footing, all-weather paddocks and turnouts promotes pasture health and ensures ample year-round turnout.
With the four-stall barn now operational, Balsam Mountain Preserve developer David Southworth turns his attention to plans for a new Upper Barn project. Blueprints are currently being finalized for an additional eight-stall barn, and the goal is to break ground in the next calendar year. The Upper Barn will provide boarding services for members’ horses and house an on-site apartment for a new equestrian assistant. To further enhance the community’s commitment to equestrian excellence, the Upper Barn will focus on delivering a remarkable boarding experience with top-tier care and unique riding opportunities for owners.
“We are devoted to being a leader in equestrian amenities among private clubs in the southeast,” Southworth says. “Our team has done an exceptional job in curating a unique club experience that features a sustainable equestrian model with opportunity for continued growth.
“As long as there is demand, we will explore expansion opportunities,” adds Southworth. “There are very few communities like Balsam Mountain Preserve. Equestrian enthusiasts choose Balsam because of its elevation, amazing views and first-class services.”
More than 40 miles of private trails round out the pristine equestrian facilities at Balsam Mountain Preserve. For both club and member use, the trails offer links to nearby Nantahala National Forest. The diverse terrain, featuring old logging roads and challenging trails, provides endless opportunities for exploration and adventure. As part of its dedication to environmental stewardship, the club has implemented various programs including a Native Plant Program, Adopt-a-Trail Program and water refill stations to reduce plastic waste.
The completion of the new four-stall barn and pastures, and planning for the initial phase of the upcoming Upper Barn project, continue to solidify Balsam Mountain Preserve’s position as a premier destination for equestrian enthusiasts. Whether it is enjoying a leisurely trail ride or honing their riding skills, members and guests can expect an unparalleled equestrian experience in this breathtaking mountain community.
