Cades Cove Loop Road
This 11-mile scenic loop is more than just a drive—it’s a trip back in time. With historic cabins, churches, and a still-functioning grist mill, visitors can explore what life was like for early settlers, all while enjoying views of the Smokies.
Little River Railroad Days
The Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum (7747 E Lamar Alexander Pkwy, Townsend) celebrates the legacy of logging and railroads in the region. Visit the free-admission museum year-round, or check out special Railroad Days events, where you can view restored trains and learn how the industry helped shape the Smokies.
Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center
Located at 123 Cromwell Dr. in Townsend, the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center offers rotating exhibits and immersive events focused on Appalachian and Native American culture. Guests can explore indoor galleries and outdoor historic buildings, with seasonal programming that brings regional stories to life, including a concert series, storyteller series and guided tours
Townsend Fall Heritage Festival & Old Timers Day
Mark your calendar for September 26–27 for this free, family-friendly event featuring bluegrass music, Appalachian crafts, clogging, and traditional demonstrations. It’s one of the area’s most beloved fall traditions, held at the Townsend Visitors Center (7906 E. Lamar Alexander Pkwy).
3rd Annual Appalachian Homecoming
Experience the heart of the Smokies like never before at Appalachian Homecoming on Saturday, August 2, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Dancing Bear Lodge & Appalachian Bistro and Peaceful Side Brewery.
This immersive event celebrates Appalachian food, music, and culture with cooking demos, storytelling, and live performances by bluegrass favorite Alex Leach. Guests can learn to make Indigenous corn dishes, settler-era biscuits, and sourdough bread, then gather for a community lunch and a whole hog roast in the evening, accompanied by bluegrass and craft beer. Tickets include full-day programming and dinner.
Blue Ribbon Country Fair
Step back in time at this charming celebration of mountain life, happening September 28 at the Heritage Center. From blacksmithing and wood-turning demos to classic pie contests and a skillet toss, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Winter Heritage Festival
Even as the weather cools, the stories stay warm. On January 25, 2025, the Winter Heritage Festival brings history indoors with live storytelling, traditional craft displays, and heritage talks at the Blount County campus of Pellissippi State and the Heritage Center.
