As rising costs and digital overload push UK travellers towards mindful, low-cost escapes, Vilnius is emerging as a surprising frontrunner for winter quietcations. The Lithuanian capital offers an authentic, budget-friendly reset, from forest therapy and traditional saunas to inner-city skiing, all within easy reach of the UK and other parts of Europe.
Trips focused on slowing down and reconnecting with the physical world are among the most sought-after travel experiences of 2026. With burnout and digital overload becoming the norm, more travellers are seeking trips that offer a genuine break from the daily grind. Vilnius, with its forests, saunas, and laid-back atmosphere, offers an affordable and authentic European option for slow winter travel, especially for those from the UK and Ireland concerned about rising costs.
“Relaxing winter experiences in Vilnius range from hiking and forest bathing to skiing and saunas, all delivered with Vilnius’ characteristic authenticity. We were recently named one of Europe’s most authentic cities. Lithuania is officially home to the happiest young people in the world, so Vilnius has a positive and laid-back atmosphere that visitors can quickly tap into,” says Eglė Girdzijauskaitė, Head of Communication at Go Vilnius.
A cost-effective winter quietcation

Rising travel costs are holding some UK and Irish travellers back. A YouGov survey in late 2025 found that of those travelling abroad less, 27% cited cost as the main reason. Vilnius, named the second most affordable city break in Europe in the UK Post Office’s City Costs Barometer, offers a solution. With multiple budget airline connections, it allows visitors to enjoy a winter quietcation without stretching their budgets.
One key feature of the quietcation trend is ultra-personalisation, with travellers creating bespoke itineraries based on their preferences. Vilnius offers a range of easily accessible winter activities for visitors to design the perfect personalised programme.
Forest bathing in town
Vilnius is one of Europe’s greenest capitals, surrounded by forests and lakes, making peaceful escapes easy. Forest therapy, inspired by the Japanese shinrin-yoku tradition, offers guided mindful walks and sensory exercises to connect with nature and reduce stress. Alternatively, self-guided hikes take advantage of over 100km of trails around the city. Popular routes include the Pūčkorių trail through Pavilniai Regional Park, the paths of Verkiai Regional Park, and the glacier-shaped Ribiškės hills, all offering hilly terrain, river views, and easy access from the city centre.
Letting off steam in the sauna
Saunas, or pirtys, are a traditional way for Lithuanians to relax. A full Lithuanian sauna ritual includes herbal-infused steam, honey and salt treatments, and massages with vantos, bundles of birch, oak, or juniper believed to have healing properties. Sessions can be tailored for groups, including women’s or men’s retreats.
Vilnius caters to all preferences, from rustic to refined. Ivanas Muša Gongą offers a boutique urban sauna in the city centre, even inside the former Lukiškės Prison. For a more traditional experience, bathhouses near the historic Pilaitė Mill provide authentic rituals just a short drive from the centre. Private sessions start from around €25 per person, making this one of Lithuania’s oldest wellness traditions accessible to all.
Inner-city skiing

For those who find quiet after activity, Vilnius delivers with Liepkalnis, a 2.6km urban ski area ideal for skiing and snowboarding, including night sessions. With one black, three red, four blue, and one green run (complete with a belt lift), as well as a ski park with obstacles, all skill levels are catered for. The slopes offer views of the Old Town and surrounding snow-covered forest, while the après-ski bar serves pizza and refreshments.
Getting to Vilnius in Winter 2026

Vilnius is easily reachable from the UK, with direct flights from London Stansted, London City, London Luton, and Dublin several times per week. With convenient transport links to Riga, Tallinn, and Poland, it also serves as a base for regional winter adventures.
