With National Road Trip Day on May 23rd, read on for the latest news on Montana’s most scenic drives that are in the process of opening for the season.
- Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway: Located in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, the road winds through the entire Pioneer Mountain Range and features granite peaks topping 10,000 feet and gentler, forested terrain stretches to the west. Bring your fly fishing and camping gear to access remote, untouched forest.

- The roadway is set to open on May 15th (weather dependent).
- Montana’s Beartooth Highway: The epic, 68-mile drive begins in the small town of Red Lodge and winds its way to Yellowstone National Park’s Northeast Entrance. This road has been described as the “most beautiful roadway in America,” and typically opens for the season the Fridaybefore Memorial Day (weather dependent).

- As an added bonus this year, North America’s only summer-only ski area Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area is set to open for the first time in two years and can be accessed from the Beartooth Highway.
- Going-to-the-Sun Road: Located in Glacier National Park, this iconic roadway cuts through the heart of the park providing views of the glacier-carved mountains.

- The road doesn’t typically open for cars until late June, but bikers can access plowed portions of the road in the springtime for car-free riding. More information on that here.
