COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 24, 2025) — The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced that The Broadmoor’s East Course, in Colorado Springs, Colo., will host the 2031 and 2037 U.S. Senior Open Championships. These will mark the fourth and fifth U.S. Senior Opens contested at the historic club, which is hosting the 45th U.S. Senior Open this week.
“The USGA is pleased to continue its partnership with The Broadmoor, an association that began in the 1950s and a site that has fully embraced professional, amateur and international competition,” said USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer. “It matters where a player wins their USGA championship and the list of winners here at The Broadmoor exemplifies the greatness of this venue.”
The Broadmoor’s East Course was designed by World Golf Hall of Famer Donald Ross and opened for play in 1918. The East Course now features a combination of Ross’ original design and holes designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1952. Located on the southern edge of the Rocky Mountains, the course sits at an elevation of more than 6,400 feet.
“The Broadmoor is honored to be selected as the site for the 2031 and 2037 U.S. Senior Open Championships,” said President/CEO of The Broadmoor Jack Damioli. “The resort will be hosting its 10th and 11th USGA championships, dating to Jack Nicklaus’ 1959 U.S. Amateur victory on our East Course. We are delighted to be able to continue this longstanding relationship with the USGA and look forward to an exciting future.”
With the playing of this week’s championship, The Broadmoor will host its third U.S. Senior Open and ninth USGA championship. When the East Course last hosted the Senior Open in 2018, David Toms secured a one-stroke victory over three other players with a 72-hole total of 3-under-par 277. Toms’ critical up-and-down par on the 71st hole was a key moment in winning his first USGA championship. In 2008, Eduardo Romero finished at 6-under-par 274 to post a four-stroke victory over Fred Funk. Romero became the second Argentine to win the Senior Open, joining 1980 champion Roberto De Vicenzo.
In 1959, Jack Nicklaus defeated Charles Coe, 1 up, at The Broadmoor to claim the first of his two U.S. Amateur titles. Nicklaus would go on to win eight USGA championships, including two U.S. Senior Opens and four U.S. Opens. The club’s West Course would host the U.S. Amateur in 1967, when Robert B. Dickson defeated Marvin “Vinny” Giles III by one stroke when the championship was contested at 72 holes of stroke play.
Annika Sorenstam shot a final-round 68 to edge Meg Mallon by one stroke in the 1995 U.S. Women’s Open Championship, winning her first of three Women’s Open titles. When the U.S. Women’s Open returned to the club in 2011, So Yeon Ryu defeated fellow Korean Hee Kyung Seo by three strokes in a three-hole aggregate playoff – the first time this format was used in the championship.
The 1962 Curtis Cup Match was held at The Broadmoor, and the USA defeated Great Britain and Ireland, 8-1. The USA Team included eight-time USGA champion JoAnne Gunderson Carner, seven-time USGA champion Anne Quast Sander, two-time U.S. Women’s Amateur winner Barbara McIntire and Judy Bell, a future USGA president and Colorado resident.
The Broadmoor’s South Course (formerly known as the Mountain Course) also hosted the 1982 Women’s Amateur, where Juli Inkster defeated Cathy Hanlon, 4 and 3. Inkster’s win marked her third consecutive U.S. Women’s Amateur championship title.
The state of Colorado will host its 36th USGA championship and the fourth U.S. Senior Open this week. In 2023, Nick Dunlap won the U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club. He joined Tiger Woods as the only players to win both the Amateur and U.S. Junior Amateur. One month earlier, Kiara Romero defeated Rianne Malixi, 1 up, to claim the U.S. Girls’ Junior, held at the U.S. Air Force Academy Eisenhower Golf Club’s Blue Course, in Colorado Springs.
The U.S. Senior Open is open to any professional or amateur golfer who is 50 years of age or older with a Handicap Index® that does not exceed 2.4. A starting field of 156 competitors will be reduced to the low 60 scorers and ties, where the remaining players will play 36 holes to determine the winner.
