Charlestown, Nevis, May 21, 2026–After the premiere of “The Trial of Alexander Hamilton and Admiral Horatio Nelson” last month at the Malcolm Guishard Center in Charlestown, Nevis, the writer-producer Greg Phillip smiles when he says “the reviews from attendees have been most gratifying.”
While it is commonly known Hamilton’s birthplace was Nevis, little is known about Nelson’s connection to Nevis, excepting perhaps he was wed to a Nevisian woman. The thrust of the play–the “trial” is four identical charges against these two men. The charges are:
Charge I: Emotional Attachment to the Island of Nevis
Charge II: Participation in Wars for Revolution and Empire Expansion
Charge III: Scandalous Behavior and Breach of Marital Vows
Charge IV: Complicity in Support of the Institution of Slavery
Hamilton and Nelson’s attorneys responded on behalf of their client to each of these charges, and after each charge was presented, the individuals in the audience voted via the play’s program QR code. This unique audience participation gave added creativity to the evening as the audience was actively performing their part as jurors in the play.
Reviews from attendees include “very well written…educational…something like this had never been done before.” Also, “quite creative and entertaining…to put these stories in a form like that was so entertaining…the actors were superb.” And “A great evening…a perfect night as we had time to go out to dinner afterwards!” Another noted “what a fun way to learn previously unknown information about these men.”
Phillip plans to take his “The Trial of Hamilton and Nelson” to local hotels for their in house guests and groups and aboard cruise ships this coming season. The next performance is scheduled for Friday, June 5, 5pm at the Malcolm Guishard Center, Pinney’s Beach, Nevis.
