April 27, 2026, Thomastown, Ireland –Mount Juliet Estate, the historic 500-acre country hotel in County Kilkenny, Ireland, announces the reopening of its iconic Manor House following an extensive restoration. The refurbishment has returned the signature accommodation of the rolling 500-acre estate to its 18th-century grandeur, meticulously transforming the Manor House with world-class comforts and amenities to meet the expectations and heighten the onsite experience of the most discerning travelers.
The project includes significant upgrades across the Manor House’s guest rooms and ground floor areas, preserving the building’s Georgian soul while modernizing the guest journey. Most notably, the restoration tripled the estate’s premier accommodation capacity, expanding the suite inventory from eight to twenty-four. Beyond the rooms, the refurbishment introduces a series of new lifestyle experiences, including a state-of-the-art private cinema and significant culinary additions to Lady Helen, the property’s Michelin-starred dining outlet named for Lady Helen McCalmont, a celebrated hostess and horse racing enthusiast whose family shaped life at the estate during the 20th century.
“We are delighted to unveil our newly refurbished Manor House, where the elegance and character of its 1757 heritage has been carefully brought to life for a new generation of guests,” said Mark Dunne, General Manager of Mount Juliet Estate. “The Manor has always been the heart of Mount Juliet Estate, and this restoration has allowed us to honor that legacy while introducing new elevated experiences for guests and locals alike.”
A Restored Manor House, Reimagined for Today
Led by Aisling Healy, Director of O’Donnell O’Neill Design (OODA) of Dublin, the refurbishment of the Manor House, originally built in 1757 as the residence of Somerset Hamilton Butler and his then bride-to-be Lady Juliet Boyle, was as much about restoring spirit as renovating touch points. Looking to the past as well as the future, Healy and the O’Donnell O’Neill team approached the house as a personality all its own, drawing inspiration from the Georgian proportions and family legacy of the estate, while reflecting on the verdant beauty of the countryside and authentic Irish culture that defines the property’s five-star hospitality.
The work included the preservation of original details of the Manor House, such as fireplaces, decorative cornicing, and timberwork; the introduction of contemporary comforts including improved lighting, acoustics, environmental control systems, and in-room technologies; and refreshing of interiors to add depth and softness through layered textures, rich fabrics, and a soothing palette of soft, natural tones, with blues that echo the River Nore and deep greens that reference surrounding woodlands.
The restoration of the Manor House further saw the first-ever naming of individual guest rooms and suites to better reflect and reference figures from the rich history of the estate. Examples include the Lady Juliana Presidential Suite, honoring the estate’s most captivating figure, whose grace and quiet influence shaped the Manor’s Georgian style, and the Somerset Suite recognizing Somerset Hamilton Butler who transformed his wife’s dowry into the enduring Mount Juliet Estate. Sustainability and responsibility were also key to the project, with everything from furniture and fittings to fabrics and finishes restored and reworked to accentuate traditional craftsmanship, with Irish suppliers and artisans tapped whenever possible.
A New Era of Manor House Entertaining
Continuing the estate’s legacy of world-class hosting, the restoration introduces new spaces designed for relaxation. A new Cinema offers a sophisticated setting for entertainment, with high-definition screening technology, design accents in marble and brass, and 12 deep velvet armchairs with footrests to ensure comfort for viewers. Reserved for guests only, the Cinema offers a carefully curated-yet-eclectic selection of films including classics, indies, and contemporary blockbusters, with programming changing constantly and three showings daily at 3pm, 6pm, and 9pm.
The Manor House also houses dining at Lady Helen, the estate’s elegant, Michelin-starred signature restaurant serving modern Irish cuisine created with the finest local produce by Executive Chef John Kelly. The restaurant’s restoration included the addition of a new wine cave. Designed as an intimate gathering space within the house, the wine cave invites guests to enjoy tastings before dinner, private experiences or relaxed moments with friends. The wine cellar features a carefully curated collection of more than 130 labels of wine and Champagne, spanning renowned international producers and exceptional Irish wines. It also serves as the setting for guided tastings and private experiences across wine and spirits, including Redbreast, the award-winning Irish Pot Still whiskey distilled in nearby Midleton.
