Mid-Year Reset: How Hotels Are Making Better Sleep the Reason to Travel

As the year reaches its midpoint, travelers are re-evaluating not just where they go, but how they want to feel while they’re there. Increasingly, that means prioritizing sleep. What was once an afterthought of travel is becoming central to the guest experience, with better sleep emerging as a defining element of modern hospitality.

In response, hotels around the world are embracing sleep tourism, transforming sleep from a passive necessity into a curated, highly intentional offering. As travelers place greater value on wellbeing, quality sleep is increasingly influencing where they stay and how they travel, prompting hotels to develop experiences specifically designed to support deeper sleep.

As demand for sleep-focused travel grows, hotels are finding new ways to make better sleep a defining part of the guest experience. Whether through immersive wellness programs, innovative sleep technology, nature-led rituals, or personalized in-room comforts, the following hotels demonstrate how properties are turning better sleep into a reason to travel.

Ananda in the Himalayas (India)

Set in the tranquil foothills of northern India overlooking the Ganges Valley, Ananda in the Himalayas is a destination wellness retreat where the natural environment is intrinsically tied to rest and rejuvenation. Crisp mountain air, expansive views, and near-total quiet create ideal conditions for uninterrupted sleep, forming the foundation of the property’s holistic approach to wellbeing.

Building on this setting, Ananda offers a dedicated Sleep Enhancement Program, designed to address insomnia, fatigue, and circadian imbalance through a personalized blend of Ayurveda, yoga, and modern wellness practices. The program is offered in 7-, 14-, and 21-night stays, with longer durations recommended to fully retrain sleep cycles and establish lasting behavioral change.

Upon arrival, Ananda’s multidisciplinary team conducts a comprehensive assessment to understand each guest’s unique constitution and sleep challenges, combining traditional Ayurvedic diagnostics with modern tools such as an FDA-approved Belun sleep assessment ring, which measures sleep architecture, oxygen saturation, heart rate variability, and sleep efficiency. Guests then follow a tailored program that may include guided meditation, pranayama breathing techniques, evening yoga, and targeted therapies such as Abhyanga massage and Shirodhara, both known to calm the nervous system and promote deep relaxation. Daily schedules are structured around natural circadian rhythms and supported by a carefully designed wellness diet and personalized treatments.

Sleep-focused touches extend to the guestroom as well, with a curated pillow menu designed to enhance comfort and support restorative rest. Additional therapies may incorporate acupuncture, breathwork, and emotional healing to regulate the nervous system and improve sleep quality, with progress observed through improved sleep continuity, breathing patterns, and overall rest over the course of the stay. The retreat’s holistic philosophy extends beyond the stay, with the recent debut of its first cookbook, The Healing Plate, bringing its wellness-focused culinary approach into the home.

The Dylan Amsterdam (The Netherlands)

Located along a quiet canal in the heart of Amsterdam, The Dylan Amsterdam is a boutique hotel with 41 rooms that offers a refined, residential style escape in contrast to the city’s more active neighborhoods. Set within a historic building, the hotel combines an intimate scale with understated design, creating a calm environment that naturally supports rest and makes room for new inspiration.

At the center of the experience is the hotel’s partnership with FreshBed and Nilson Beds, bringing together advanced sleep technology and traditional craftsmanship. Three suites are equipped with the FreshBed, the world’s first fully climate-controlled bed, designed to regulate temperature and airflow to help guests fall asleep faster and improve overall sleep quality. The system features dual-zone climate control, allowing guests to personalize the temperature on each side of the bed, while integrated airflow helps maintain a consistently cool and breathable sleeping environment throughout the night.

This innovation is paired with Nilson Beds, known for their handcrafted construction, ergonomic support, and focus on long-term sleeping comfort. Together, these features reflect a growing trend in hospitality that treats sleep as a performance-enhancing element of travel, rather than simply a hotel necessity. Beyond the bed itself, the hotel’s canal-side location, sound insulation, blackout curtains, and low-light evening ambiance help reduce external disruptions and support the body’s natural wind-down process.

This philosophy extends beyond the guestroom through the recently launched Unscripted Summer experience, which encourages travelers to embrace a slower, more intuitive pace while exploring Amsterdam. Rather than maximizing itineraries, the program promotes mindful discovery and balance, aligning with a broader shift toward restorative travel. Together, these features position The Dylan as a destination where thoughtful design, personalized comfort, and sleep-focused innovation come together to create a more reviving stay.

Hotel Belmar (Costa Rica)

Nestled within Costa Rica’s Monteverde cloud forest, Hotel Belmar offers an immersive environment where the sounds of wind, mist, and wildlife replace urban noise, creating a naturally calming backdrop for rest. Surrounded by lush biodiversity and cooler mountain temperatures, the hotel leverages its unique setting to encourage a deeper connection with nature and a slower pace of living, both of which support restorative sleep.

Here, sleep is reimagined as a sensory ritual grounded in sustainability, wellness, and connection to place. Launched in April 2026, the hotel’s Deep Sleep Ritual transforms traditional turndown service into a guided wind-down experience. A bedside Good Night Guide introduces accessible, science-backed tips inspired by circadian rhythms, while a QR code links to a 10-minute guided meditation or Yin yoga session. A seasonal herbal infusion prepared with chamomile, lemongrass, mint, and other botanicals grown on-site or at the hotel’s regenerative farm, Finca Madre Tierra, helps prepare the body and mind for rest.

Expanding on this approach, June 2026 marked the debut of Artista at Hotel Belmar, a collection of 10 private villas designed to prioritize sleep through architecture, environmental wellness, and biophilic design. Immersed within the forest canopy, each villa maximizes natural daylight exposure, incorporates warm ambient lighting in the evening, and encourages a gradual transition from activity to relaxation.

Healthy building principles are woven throughout the experience, including optimized ventilation, enhanced air quality, low-toxicity materials, and CORE Green Building Certification. In-villa amenities such as soaking tubs, saltwater plunge pools, magnesium-infused sleep rituals, and guided relaxation practices further reinforce the property’s sleep-focused philosophy. Combined with the forest’s constant natural soundscape and absence of urban distractions, these elements create an environment designed to help guests fully disconnect, slow down, and experience deeper, more restorative sleep.

The Imperial Hotel, Tokyo (Japan)

In the heart of Tokyo, the Imperial Hotel Tokyo takes a thoughtful approach to sleep by focusing on the details that shape each guest’s rest, from personalized pillows and bedding to room design. Rather than offering a dedicated sleep program, the hotel prioritizes comfort-focused enhancements that let guests tailor their sleep environment to their preferences.

At the center of this approach is the hotel’s original Sleepworks bedding collection, developed exclusively for guestrooms on the Imperial Floor. Designed with restorative sleep in mind, the collection features air pocket coil spring mattresses, Polish goose down duvets, and bedding treated to enhance antibacterial and deodorizing properties. The mattresses also incorporate fibers engineered to generate minus ions, further contributing to the overall sleep environment. Extending the experience beyond the stay, Sleepworks pillows and pillowcases are also available for purchase through the hotel’s online shop in Japan.

Recognizing that sleep preferences vary from person to person, the Imperial Hotel Tokyo also offers an extensive pillow selection. In addition to the standard firm and soft feather pillows found in each guestroom, guests may request alternatives including buckwheat hull, latex, Tempur®, cotton, acorn, and Dacron pillows, allowing for a more personalized level of comfort and support throughout the night. Additionally, guests can request comfort-focused amenities such as airweave mattress pads, humidifiers, and extra pillows to further customize their sleep experience.

The hotel’s sleep-conscious design extends beyond the bed itself. A custom-designed bedside reading light, developed by the Imperial Hotel’s Facilities Engineering team and inspired by the form of a medical endoscope, provides focused illumination for reading while minimizing light spill. This enables one guest to comfortably read without disrupting a companion’s rest, reflecting the property’s broader philosophy that small, thoughtful details can have a meaningful impact on sleep quality and overall wellbeing.
