(SYLVA, N.C.) – Balsam Mountain Preserve, a premier resort-style private residential community nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains between the charming mountain towns of Sylva and Waynesville, announces the appointment of Gayle Starke as its new club general manager.
Starke, who most recently served as the general manager at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, brings over a decade of leadership experience in the private club industry, along with a distinguished background in world-class hospitality. During her five-year tenure at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, Starke rose quickly through the ranks, serving as member services director and clubhouse manager before being named general manager. She is widely recognized for her ability to foster a culture of excellence and belonging, ensuring both members and staff alike feel at home within the club. As general manager, she oversees all aspects of operations, including equestrian, food and beverage, golf, fitness and wellness, membership, capital planning and integrated governance.
Before her time at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, Starke worked in various concierge capacities at Champion Hills Club, The Omni Grove Park Inn and Spa, and Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, all in the Carolinas.
Born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland, Starke’s professional journey began in London, where she trained as a professional dancer. Her early career included touring with a renowned Irish step-dancing production and spending nearly six years performing with The Walt Disney Company. These experiences provided her with a foundational understanding of service excellence and the ‘magic’ of guest interactions.
“Gayle’s impressive track record of leadership and her deep commitment to the member experience make her the ideal person to lead The Club at Balsam Mountain,” says Doug Franklin, club president. “Her unique background in high-level performance and hospitality, combined with her proven success in the North Carolina private club circuit, will be invaluable as we continue to elevate our beloved community.”
Starke’s leadership philosophy is rooted in her belief that the club environment is akin to professional theater.
“Every day, we have an opportunity to put on a show and create an unforgettable experience for our members,” Starke says. “I am honored to join and lead the team at Balsam Mountain Preserve and look forward to building on its rich traditions while growing alongside such a dedicated staff.”
Throughout her career, Starke has emphasized internal staff development, noting that one of her most rewarding professional achievements is seeing colleagues progress in their own careers. She attributes her strong work ethic and attention to detail to her childhood dance teacher and the discipline instilled in her from a young age.
