Sydney’s next world-class waterfront destination is nearly ready to make a splash. The highly anticipated new Sydney Fish Market—an investment of $836 million AUD (approx. $545 million USD) by the NSW Government—is set to open its doors in late January 2026, transforming the city’s Blackwattle Bay into a vibrant new hub for food lovers, culture seekers, and waterfront wanderers alike.
A Global Destination for Seafood and Culture
The reimagined market will deliver a unique harbour-side experience, doubling its retail footprint to 130,000 square feet. Visitors can look forward to a bustling mix of fishmongers, restaurants, cafés, bars, and specialty retailers, along with world-class auction and wholesale facilities that put Sydney’s seafood heritage on full display.
Connecting City and Sea
Set along the harbour’s edge, the new precinct features more than 65,000 square feet of public space, including a waterfront promenade that will seamlessly connect into Sydney’s upcoming 15-kilometre foreshore walk—stretching from Rozelle Bay to Woolloomooloo. It’s an open invitation to explore Sydney by the sea, blending fresh local flavour with spectacular harbour views.
Honouring History and Heritage
Beyond the seafood, the site tells a deeper story. A heritage interpretation program will honour the area’s First Nations heritage and maritime history through five thoughtfully curated installations spread across the public domain. Each element offers visitors a meaningful connection to Country, celebrating the site’s past while shaping its future as a gathering place for all.
Anchoring the Renewal of Blackwattle Bay
As the first project to be delivered as part of the Blackwattle Bay urban renewal, the new Sydney Fish Market will set the tone for a broader transformation of the inner harbour. With its mix of culture, cuisine, and community, it’s poised to become a must-visit icon and a powerful new drawcard for Sydney and NSW tourism.
